The 78th IIRB Congress was held from 21st to 23rd June 2022 at the Wallonia Conference Center in Mons, Belgium. The congress was organised in collaboration with the Belgian research institute IRBAB and marked the 90th anniversary of both IIRB and IRBAB.
The congress opened with the session ‘Agriculture’s strength adapting to climatic and environmental challenges’, presenting Belgian sugar beet research. The following five technical sessions informed on different topical issues in sugar beet cultivation. Two poster sessions with 108 posters allowed participants to discuss the presented results with the poster authors. A field day with a visit to Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, faculty of the University of Liège, with a guided tour at the new research unit Terra, rounded off the programme.
An international audience of 320 participants from 20 countries attended the 78th IIRB congress, representing research institutions, sugar beet growers' associations, breeding companies, sugar industry and further institutions in the upstream sector.
Participants appreciated the topical programme with interesting contributions and the possibility of networking and meeting again face-to-face after the long Covid period..
